Baybayin runes

.° 𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊 °.

A set of 18 Baybayin characters, taken from the syllabic Baybayin alphabet of pre-colonial Philippines (one of hundreds of script variations of the Philippines isles!)The concept of using the Baybayin script as runes was created originally by Rhodoro "Bing" Veloso.
For more information about the history of Baybayin and its cultural significance, check out this post here.

There are two style options for runes: birchwood half-domes or flat wooden discs. The Baybayin characters are woodburned on one side. I can paint, dye, and/or woodburn designs on the blank side at your request.See below for examples-

Each set will come with a pamphlet for interpretations of the runes and suggestions on how to use them.
I'd love to hear thoughts about how folks would engage with these runes -- the power of the craft is what you bring to it!
To order your own set, fill out the order form on the "How to Order" page. i.e, "baybayin runes, fern frond pattern, blue dye" "baybayin runes, plain wooden disc," etc.
Want a custom pattern but not sure what design you want? Peep these reviews for inspiration!

As a pagan and witch myself, I love the Elder Futhark Runes, Tarot decks, and Oracle cards of all kinds. Yet, I felt something missing -- something to connect me further to my ancestors. In my research leading me to many scholars, historians, and storytellers of pre-colonial Philippines, I was motivated to create something special for my communities near and far.I hope this sparks more curiosity and conversation about the Baybayin characters as a divining instrument and tool of personal intuition. I am in no way claiming to be a Baybayin expert; I advocate for the rejuvenation and preservation of these beautiful pre-colonial cultures and histories.Feel free to also check out my massive google doc full of more witchy/pagan/animist resources for Pin@y folks. It is an ongoing list of materials and authentic sources. Have something to add to it? Email me!

About the Shop

"Still Life with Kingfisher" began with the intention to honor and uplift all things. No matter how small, all has its place and there is no thing without value. Every finished piece dons a new story to embrace. From pen to canvas to fabric, Circe combines natural elements like flora and bone with found trinkets and metals. In the spirit of sustainability, Circe aims to use upcycled materials as much as possible and make details from scratch.

As a grief walker and death doula, Circe marries themes of death and whimsy within their creations and enjoys the dance and coexistence between the two. Being a harm reductionist at heart and advocate for decolonization in all forms, they frequently call upon and pay homage to their mexican and filipino roots, whose folklore and mythos grounds their storytelling. Whether multimedia canvas art or eccentric headpiece, each piece has its own personality and aesthetic.

The name "Still Life with Kingfisher" is a reference to one of their favorite books, Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom Robbins -- a book that tonally shifted Circe's thoughts and imagination toward the bizarre, the macabre, and the whimsically absurd. Named in combination after a bird of Greek mythology, the Kingfisher serves as a beacon of peace -- the eye of the storm.

Frequently Asked Questions

I saw an item I really liked and now its gone. Will you make more?

Claimed items will be immediately unlisted from this site. All the photos of completed & sold pieces will be on my archive page to browse through if you would like to commission me for a similar piece. I can do my best to replicate previous concepts, but majority of my work are one-of-a-kind designs.

Why horns? Why beanies?

I've always had an affinity for horned & hooved animals - especially deer. As someone who doesn't feel very human in general, I wanted to create a way to feel more expressive and euphoric in my skin. My faun and antler beanies feel not only magical but comfy and cozy for sensory-sensitive folks like myself. I'm grateful that these creations have have made their way to others who feel the same way in this world.

Do you ship to [insert country]?

I am based out of California, USA and am willing to ship outside of the United States. Customers are responsible for shipping cost and possible tariff fees. If you are outside of the US and would like to order, reach out to discuss the best shipping method !

I'm not sure if an item will fit me. Do you have a size chart?

As most of my items are upcycled, I do not have a size chart reference. However, I am happy to provide any further measurements -- whether for apparel, hats, beanies, etc - I can to ensure you receive something that is comfortable and functional.

Do you do customs?

I love to do custom orders! Please check out my Order Page for more on that process if you're interested in a custom piece. However, if my customs status is closed please do not submit a form at this time. I will post when my commissions status is open on my social media links, so keep an eye out!

Do your products come from a pet-free household?

They come from a smokefree household, but not a pet-free one. I have a dog and a cockatiel who often perch beside me while I work, and while they don't run amuck in my materials or workspace, they are around it.

Where do you source your materials?

I do my best to upcycle from local thrift and hospice stores-- hat bases, faux decorations, beanies, velvet, etc.
When bought new, materials like fabric, decor, foam, etc are sourced through Etsy shops or Michael's.
New beanies are bought from the following brands: Wmcaps, Connectyle, Zooron, and Nertpow. Most are polyester / nylon / fleece blend. Some of the brands also feature an inner fleece lining. If you are allergic to certain fabric contents, feel free to reach out!
